Non-Negotiables

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required for this role
  • You need at least five years of experience as a Systems Safety Software Engineer or in a related role
  • You have hands-on experience developing safety-critical software, preferably using modeling tools like Simulink or SCADE and converting to C/C++
  • You can demonstrate experience creating Level of Rigor artifacts required for safety standards compliance
  • You have specific examples of coordinating with systems, test, and development teams to define and generate safety features
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field is required
  • You are willing to work on-site in Washington, DC, with the option for local hybrid work

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of safety-critical software applications for autonomous systems
  • Define and implement software safety requirements and architecture using model-based design tools like Simulink or SCADE
  • Generate and maintain Level of Rigor documentation to comply with industry safety standards such as ISO 26262 and MIL-STD-882E
  • Coordinate with systems engineering, testing, and development teams to integrate safety features into the overall product
  • Conduct safety analyses, risk assessments, and failure mode analyses to identify and mitigate hazards
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers on best practices for safety-critical software development
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety processes and methodologies across the engineering organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ISO 26262 functional safety standard for road vehicles
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882E system safety standard criteria
  • Knowledge of ASIL-D decomposition and compliance for the highest automotive safety integrity level
  • A Master's degree or higher in Engineering or a related field is a plus
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience in a safety-critical software team
  • Experience in the aerospace or automotive industry, particularly with autonomous systems
  • Certification in functional safety (e.g., CFSP, TÜV) is advantageous
